Our Story

Our family loves road trips. Like most families preparing for a road trip we packed the car with snacks, games and books. The start of our road trips usually began in the wee hours of the morning before the sun lit our path as we had a full day of driving ahead of us. Like a lot of families, we played the alphabet game. The alphabet game is where you look for each letter of the alphabet from A to Z in road signs. After repeatedly playing this game, we developed another game called larger than life. We would look for objects that were larger than life. An example of this might be a cow that is twice the size of a normal cow. A great example is the Spoonbridge and Cherry sculptural fountain designed by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen located in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Prior to leaving home on our road trips, we would each predict how many larger than life items we would see on our road trip. We each wrote a number on a piece of paper and placed it in an envelope to be opened only upon completion of the road trip. The person closest to the actual number won a small prize. We would document each larger than life object and where we saw it and in some cases we would take photos of them.

As with all games, rules had to be developed as there would be discussions as to whether an object was actually larger than life. An example of this is the Sinclair dinosaur. Sure, its big, but big does not automatically mean its larger than life.  So that doesn’t count. Because we needed rules and rulings to settle family disagreements, we created The Council of Larger Than Life Objects. This council included my wife, son, daughter and me.

When I set out to become an author and realizing that I needed to create a publishing company I started pondering a name. The name had to embody our mission and vision. Ultimately our goal is to support those young adults who were in foster care find their way through higher education or entering a career. I talked to my daughter about the purpose of the company and needing a company name. She suggested Council of Larger Than Life Objects. I immediately thought she was on to something. Shortening it to Larger Than Life, conceptually was exactly what our company was.

Larger Than Life represents a concept that we have an impact on others that is larger than our own life. We can positively or negatively affect others through our words and actions that can and do live beyond our own lives. We are like a drop in a pond causing ripples both gentle and harsh that impact a person, the shoreline, that can change them forever.

Our mission statement is to “Enhance self-esteem, confidence and leadership through the sharing of life experiences”. We hope the experiences we share in our books will have a positive impact on you and those you come into contact with.

We invite you to follow along on this journey by following our social media sites and supporting our efforts by purchasing our books and spreading the word about Larger Than Life LLC.
